In the Water Conservation Garden there will be full-sized examples of drought tolerant plants available for viewing and purchase. There will also be special activities to celebrate the launch of the Garden’s new logo. Don’t miss this water smart plant extravaganza! Fabulous Figs! This is one of my favorite fruit times of the year. Just after late summer’s heat dissipates (not that we had much heat this year), my figs start to ripen. Fig trees are very easy to grow. They take full sun, any type of soil and very little water (once established), though they grow faster and fruit better with a bit more water. Bare root fig trees will appear in our nurseries in another month or so, so this is a good time to sample the ripe fruits and decide which is your favorite. Bare root figs are dormant so they look like sticks. Don’t be put off. Once spring arrives, they’ll sprout leaves. After you purchase your bare root fig, cut the trunk back to about two feet tall. This practice encourages the tree to form low branches, which makes fruits easy to reach. To plant, dig a hole big enough to fit the roots without bending them. Notice the soil line on the trunk? That’s as deep as you want to plant. Fig roots are gopher gourmet. So, before you plant, line the planting hole with a hardware cloth or a gopher basket. Tree roots get through the wire mesh but gophers don’t. Add a few handfuls of worm castings into the planting hole, place the tree, then refill with unamended soil. Paint the bark with 50/50 white acrylic house paint and water so the bark doesn’t sunburn. Make an irrigation basin around the base of the tree and deep water after planting. Mulch around the irrigation basin. Pick figs when super soft. They will not ripen off the tree and you do not want to bite into an under ripe fig. They are filled with white, sticky latex whose taste you will never forget. A fig tree can grow 20 feet tall and wide, but can be pruned small to keep fruit in easy reach. Or, espaliers your fig against a trellis. Prune just after harvest. Next year’s fruit form at branch tips, so if you wait too long, you’ll prune off next year’s crop! Figs start to fruit after a few years in the ground. Some varieties produce a small, late spring crop (called the “breba” crop) in addition to the main crop. There are dozens if not hundreds of fig varieties. In the nursery, you’ll typically find ‘Mission’ or ‘Brown Turkey,’ both dark colored figs with deep pink flesh. You might see yellow ‘Genoa’ or green-and-yellow striped ‘Panachee’ whose flesh is the color of raspberries. All are wonderful. Wipes Clog Pipes Disposable does not always mean flushable. Fall Water Smart Gardening Festival Saturday, November 13, 9:00 am-3:00 pm Jamacha Road Pipeline ProjectReaches CompletionReaches Completion The Otay Water District is pleased to announce the recent completion of the 5.1-mile Jamacha Road Pipeline Project in East County. The project, which included the installation of a new 36-inch in diameter pipeline and the replacement of older pre-existing pipes, will increase water supply and improve water reliability for the region. Construction began in September of 2009 near Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego and is a key element of the East County Regional Treated Water Improvement Program. The pipeline connects to the San Diego County Water Authority’s Flow Control Facility 14 located near the intersection of South Third Street and Lexington Avenue in El Cajon. The completed project will make an additional 12 million gallons of water per day available during peak periods and an additional 16 million gallons per day available during off-peak periods. The water will come from the Helix Water District R.M. Levy Water Treatment Plant. The pipeline and two recently completed 10-million gallon storage tanks in Rancho San Diego represent a $50 million investment in water infrastructure in San Diego’s East County. Otay Water District Receives National Honor for Water and Energy Conservation The Otay Water District has been selected by the Irrigation Association’s Awards and Honors Committee to receive the 2010 National Water and Energy Conservation Award.
